History Of Bastar
Bastar is the same place as Dandakaranya in the Indian mythological epic Ramayana. In 450 AD, this place came under Nala King's rule, known as Bhavadatta Varman. However, according to the details' chronological order, we will know that Bastar was founded sometime in1324 CE. The founder king had successfully established this place under the guidance of the local Goddess, Danteshwari. Goddess Danteshwari remains the prime deity of this place, and the said king successfully ruled this place till 1369. His successor became Hamir Deva, after whom many descendants of kings ruled this geographical land.
Later in the 15th century, Bastar was further divided into two kingdoms. One was Kanker, and the other one was Jagdalpur. It is said that the present Halba tribe claims to descend here from the military class of these very kingdoms. Then, till the 18th century, the state of Bastar remained free until the rise of Marathas. Sometime around 1861, Bastar became part of the newly-formed central provinces. Then, in 1863, after witnessing the feud of the Kotapad region, Bastar was specifically given over to Jeypore, one of the neighbouring states. However, there was a condition of paying a tribute of Rs.3,000. Pravir Chandra Bhanj Deo was the last ruler of Bastar. He had ascended the throne in 1936 when India was still a decade away from its independence. However, he was shot dead after Indian independence while leading a movement protesting against the encroachment of land by outsiders.
