History of Marina Beach Tamil Nadu
Due to the rise in sea level, there used to be many incidents of inundation here, especially before the 16th century. However, when the sea withdrew a little, multiple ridges and lagoons remained. It was during those times, that specifically, a sand ridge ran from the mouth of Cooum to the present spot which is known as the Presidency college. This ridge in the present times is Marina Beach.
Before the construction of Madras Harbour, this beach was considered as a strip of mud only. During that time, the governor of Madras Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff was captivated by the scenic beauty of this place and then decided to build a promenade alongside the beach. After everything was done, the beach was given the name of Madras Marina.
