The erstwhile city of Sakchi was named Jamshedpur in 1919 by Lord Chelmsford. The city was named after its founder, Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, who played a major role in its formation. Around the beginning of the 20th century, Jamshetji Tata met steel makers in Pittsburgh, California, to get advanced technology for the steel plant. It is also said that Jamshedji Tata got the inspiration for the steel plantation while he was listening to Thomas Carlyle's lectures.
He then asked geologist Charles Page Perin to find an ideal place in India for a steel plantation. His conditions were that the place be rich in coal, iron, water, and limestone. To continue the project, the Maharaja of Mayurbhanj appointed a geologist named Pramatha Nath Bose. This was the time when P.N. Bose was working on the lands of Sakchi. On the Maharaja's request, he surveyed the Gorumahisani Hills of Babonghati region in Mayurbhanj, where he found Hematite stone that came under Sakchi.
The visionary Jamshetji Tata not only founded his steel plantation in the Sakchi village of Jamshedpur but also got the blueprint to develop the city that is now known as Jamshedpur. With his continuous effort, the place emerged as a well-developed city with a great infrastructure. It is the only city in India that does not come under the municipality's administration. It still runs under the administration of Tatas. Now let’s check out the best places to visit in Jamshedpur!
