History of Jodhpur
As per the records, Ahirs were known as the primary inhabitants of Marwar. After them, it was the Rajputs who established their rule. The Jodhpur city was founded in 1459 by a Rajput chief named Rao Jodha who belonged to the Rathore Clan.
Coming on to the early modern period and the timeframe when Rao Chandrasen Rathore had died in 1581, the kingdom was annexed by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar. And after Akbar, it was Aurangzeb who took possession of this region after the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh. When Aurangzeb died, the former ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Ajit Singh took the throne as the rightful king.
The British Rule and Post-Independence Period
It is said that during the British Raj, Jodhpur had the largest land area in all of Rajputana which was around 36,071 sq miles. During those times, the Marwari traders, due to their trading skills occupied a position of dominance in the country’s trade.
When India became independent in 1947, Jodhpur merged into the union of India becoming the second largest city of Rajasthan. Interestingly, at the time of partition, the then ruler of Jodhpur, Hanwant Singh didn’t want to join India. It was only after his discussion with one of the visionary leaders, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, that Jodhpur was included in Rajasthan and became a part of independent India.
