The term "Seven Wonders of the World" typically refers to two different lists of remarkable structures from antiquity and the modern era. Here are both sets of Seven Wonders:
1. Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:
The Great Pyramid of Giza: Located in Egypt, it is the only surviving wonder from the original list. It was built as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BC.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: These legendary gardens were said to be in the ancient city of Babylon, near present-day Hillah, Babil, Iraq. However, there is debate about their existence.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia: This colossal statue of the Greek god Zeus was created by the sculptor Phidias and stood in the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, Greece.
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus: Located in present-day Turkey, this grand temple was dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis. It was rebuilt several times after being destroyed.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: This tomb was built in Halicarnassus (modern Bodrum, Turkey) for Mausolus, a local ruler. The term "mausoleum" derives from this structure.
The Colossus of Rhodes: An enormous bronze statue of the sun god Helios that stood at the entrance to the harbor of the island of Rhodes in Greece.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria: Also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, this lighthouse guided sailors into the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. It was one of the tallest structures of the ancient world.
2. New Seven Wonders of the World:
In 2007, a Swiss corporation organized a global poll to select seven new wonders of the world, highlighting modern landmarks. The results are as follows:
Chichen Itza: A Mayan pyramid located in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
Christ the Redeemer: A statue of Jesus Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Great Wall of China: A series of fortifications in northern China, primarily built during the Ming Dynasty.
Machu Picchu: An ancient Incan city situated in the Andes Mountains of Peru.
Petra: A historical city carved into the rose-red cliffs of southern Jordan.
The Roman Colosseum: An iconic amphitheater in Rome, Italy, used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
The Taj Mahal: A stunning white marble mausoleum in Agra, India, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
These lists showcase some of the most remarkable human achievements in architecture and engineering from different time periods and cultures.
