Lord Buddha is believed to have breathed his last in a place called Kushinagar, also known as Kusinara, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. This event is known as "Parinirvana" in Buddhism, signifying the final passing away of Gautama Buddha into Nirvana. Kushinagar is one of the four major pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Lord Buddha, the others being Lumbini (his birthplace), Bodh Gaya (where he attained enlightenment), and Sarnath (where he delivered his first sermon). Kushinagar holds great significance in Buddhist tradition as the place of Lord Buddha's Mahaparinirvana.
