The Ganges River, also known as the Ganga, originates in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Its source is at the Gangotri Glacier in the western Himalayas. The Gangotri Glacier is located at an altitude of approximately 4,100 meters (13,500 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas. From this source, the Ganges River flows downstream, eventually reaching the plains of northern India and continuing eastward through several states before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges is one of the most sacred and important rivers in India, with great cultural and religious significance.
