The history of Singapore can be traced back to the 12th century AD, when the first settlements were established here. It remained a prime trading base of the region for several centuries and was successively controlled by seaborne kingdoms. In 1819, a British statesman, Stamford Raffles, negotiated a treaty with the local ruler to allow the British to establish a trading port on the island, ultimately leading to the British rule there in 1867.
During World War II, Singapore was conquered by the Japanese, who remained in control from 1942 to 1945. With the surrender of the Japanese, the island again reverted to British control, which remained in power till 1963, when it joined the coalition of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia. However, due to differences in politics, race and religion, it was unanimously voted out just two years later and on 9 August 1965, it became an independent and sovereign democratic nation.
Although Singapore is a small-sized nation, its local customs and cultures are a blend of multiple ethnic cultures, including those of Chinese, Malay and Indians, primarily because of the country's history as a trading hub. The diversity of the culture is also apparent in its spoken languages, including English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.
