History of Chapora Fort
This fort was built in the 18th century and is situated around 10 km from Mapusa. It is also known by the name Shahpura which means the town of the Shahs. Throughout history, this fort has seen various rulers come and go. Once, while trying to end the Portuguese rule in Goa, Prince Akbar joined hands with Maratha warriors, who were practically his enemies, to conquer this place and successfully made this place his basecamp.
Across the Chapora river, the Hindu ruler of the Pernem, who was one of the sworn enemies of the Portuguese, successfully held the fort for two years after it fell to the hands of Marathas in 1719. Seeing this, the Portuguese made significant repairs to the fort by adding many features, bastions, and tunnels. All these efforts had only one objective; to strengthen the grip of Portuguese rule here. By 1741, they were able to regain the fort in full control.
