Akbar’s Tomb is a very significant piece of architecture, in modern Indian history. This remnant of Mughal architecture is located in Sikandra and was built from 1605-1618. The structure is built out of sandstone and white marble and is truly a fascinating tourist attraction to explore. It is said that the Mughal Emperor kept a close eye on the construction work of this tomb. What is really interesting about this tomb is that unlike other Muslim emperors, the tomb of Akbar the Great faces towards the rising sun instead of Mecca.

If you want to visit this epitome of architectural wonder, then the best time would be the onset of the winter season. During this time, the weather is quite pleasant and one can hope to make some of the best memories over here.

History of Akbar's Tomb

According to history, it is believed that the site where the tomb had to be erected was chosen by the Emperor himself. It is believed that during the rule of Aurangzeb, the tomb of Akbar suffered a lot of losses. This was so, as Aurangzeb had ruined many Hindu temples and forts. Thus, to take revenge, the Jaats attacked the Agra Fort and to offend Aurangzeb, even looted the tomb of Akbar.

1. Mariam’s Tomb

One kilometre away from Akbar’s Tomb, there lies the tomb of Begum Mariam, who was the wife of Akbar. This tomb was built by Jahangir in memory of his mother.

2. Akbar’s Cenotaph

Apart from the tomb of Akbar, there is a cenotaph that was erected in the honour of the king. Again, the architecture is such that it will give you a major instinct of Mughal age and a desire to relive the past.

3. Agra Fort

This fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a must-visit for many. This fort is located at a distance of 2-3 km from Taj Mahal. The fort was constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. For history buffs, this place is a must-visit.

4. Roam Around the Galleries

While roaming Akbar’s Tomb complex, you will find galleries spreading an utmost tranquil ambience. You can even sit there and take the feel of the past era.

How to Reach Akbar’s Tomb

The Akbar Tomb is situated in Uttar Pradesh at a distance of about 237, 1,222, 1,328, 1,945 km from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru respectively. Here are all the important details on how you can reach here by public transport.

By Air

You will need to deboard at Kheria Airport, Agra situated about 10-15 km away. The airport is well connected with other Indian cities via direct and connecting flights. From the airport, you will need to hire a cab or some other means of public transport to reach your destination.

By Train

The Idgah Railway Station is the nearest train station to the Akbar’s Tomb situated at about 10-15 km away. After deboarding at the train station, you will need to cover the remaining distance by some means of public transportation.

By Road

Another option to travel here would be via road. The overall road networks connecting to and fro Akbar’s Tomb have good connectivity. For travelling, you can hire a bus or a cab. If you are not comfortable in travelling some public transport, then you can always take your own vehicle to reach here.
