History of Jeolikot
Jeolikot is known for its ghost story, the presence of which is felt there even to this day. It is believed that in the 19th century, an army man, Lt. Col Warwick arrived in the village of Jeolikot. Soon, he met an Indian girl and they both fell in love with each other. After some time, the Lieutenant married the girl. However, in a few years, the girl passed away leaving Lt. Warwick all alone.
He was now compelled to live in a 20 room house which he had built with great love and devotion for the girl and himself. It is said that he didn’t allow even the servants to come inside the house after her demise.
But soon, the villagers started noticing something strange. They used to see something that seemed like Warwick wife’s ghost riding a horse in the village. Many of the locals even claimed that they saw a girl’s silhouette riding a horse in the middle of the night.
Later on, it was discovered that it was none other than Lt. Warwick who, dressed as his wife, used to ride a horse around the village every night. But what truly is scary is the fact that the villagers still hear a horse galloping at night till today, even after a century.
Major Attractions in and Around Jeolikot
This is a beautiful freshwater lake that is known for its captivating beauty. Apart from its magnificent beauty, the kidney like shape of the Naini lake is considered to be its highlighting feature. One can see lots of ducks and fishes while boating in the water of this lake.
The rocky caves are situated in the Mallital area of Nainital. It is basically a set of six small yet magnificent caves carved in the shape of various animals. The main purpose of this habitat is to offer the tourists a glimpse of Himalayan Wildlife, and the popular ones are the Tiger Cave, Panther Cave, Apes Cave, Bat Cave and Flying Fox Cave. The opening time of the caves is from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. And to enter the premises, the adults will need to pay INR 60, whereas the children are charged INR 25. If you want to take a camera inside then an extra fee of INR 25 would be charged.
