Also referred to as the gateway of Chotanagpur, Chatra enjoys a rich historical past. As per historical records, the place was governed by Great Emperor Ashoka in 232 BC. Chatra was part of a vast area ruled by Ashoka, and collectively this area was called the Atavika states. All these states, including Chatra, accepted the rule of Ashoka’s Maurya Empire. Later, the place was annexed by the Delhi Sultanate during Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq’s reign, making it a part of Bihar Subah under the sovereignty of the Mughal Empire.
In 1769, the area came under the control of the British East India Company. During this time, Raja Rammohan Roy played a vital role in bringing monumental societal reforms working as a Serestadar. The Battle of Chatra was another highlight that made this quaint place very popular. This battle was fought between Britishers and insurgents during the First War of Independence in 1857. This area is also popular among Jain devotees as it is the birthplace of Sitala Swami, the tenth Jain Tirthankara.
This fort is an integral part of Kunda Palace, which is in ruins today. This 17th-century old fort is in a very dilapidated condition today but speaks volumes about ancient times when the fort used to be one of the striking structures of this area. It is approximately 3 to 4 miles away from Kunda Village. Visitors love checking out Kunda Caves, located half a mile away from Kunda Palace. A narrow path connects the cave with the palace. While walking through this path, a small stream accompanies you, adding to the natural beauty of this place.
Nature lovers would love to check out this stunning waterfall on the way to Maloodah from Chatra. It lies 6.5 km west of Chatra, where an approximately 4.5 km distance is completed in a jeep and rests on foot to reach the waterfall, with gushing waters cascading down from 30 feet into a reservoir below. Shrawan maas attracts visitors to this waterfall, who love taking a dip in cool water with the rain beating down on their heads. The area around this waterfall is perfect for family picnics.
Near the bed of Balbal, Duari is a natural hot spring and is known for its medicinal qualities. The locals frequently visit this spot to get rid of their skin diseases.
