History of Madame Tussauds
The history of Madame Tussaud dates back to 1761 in Strasbourg, France, where Marie Tussaud, upon whom this museum chain has been named, was born as Marie Grosholtz. Marie’s mother was skilled in creating models using wax and she passed on the same skill to her daughter. Marie learned and mastered the art of creating models and statues so quickly that she made her first statue of Voltaire (French Writer and Philosopher) in 1777, at the mere age of 16. Later, at 17, she was designated as the art tutor to Madame Elizabeth, the sister of King Louise XVI.
During her lifetime she made the wax models of Benjamin Franklin (political Philosopher) and Jean Jacques Rousseau (writer and political philosopher). After the death of her mother, she inherited her mother’s collection of models and statues which she displayed on many tours. Marie, in 1795, married Francois Tussaud and added his surname to her name and from then she became Marie Tussaud.
She named her show as Madame Tussaud’s and travelled to Britain with her collection of wax models and statues. Due to Napoleonic wars, Marie decided to stay in Britain and opened a museum in London. Today, Madame Tussaud’s museums are a major attraction for people from across the globe. Madame Tussauds Museum was opened in December 2017 in Delhi and since then it has become one of the most visited sights in Delhi.
Madame Tussauds provided Indians the opportunity to witness the global attraction of wax statues. However, the parent company, Merlin Entertainments has decided to shut the outlet at Connaught place.
