Also known as the Dal Lake, Manimahesh Lake is situated in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayan mountains. This place is nestled at an elevation of about 4,080 meters and is considered to be second in significance to the Lake Mansarovar in Tibet.

There are multiple legends associated with the origin of Manimahesh Lake. One such legend states that Lord Shiva had created the lake after he was married to Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that if there is an avalanche or a blizzard, it is majorly due to the anger of Lord Shiva.
Abode of the Divine Trinity
As per the mythology, it is believed that this region is the abode of the divine trinity namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is said that Lord Shiva resides in this place for six months and afterwards he handovers the reigns to Lord Vishnu for the remainder of the time. The day this exchange takes place between the Gods, that day is celebrated as Janamashtami. And when Lord Shiva again returns to Manimahesh, this day is celebrated as Shivaratri.
