“Preserving the past is like keeping alive the curiosity”. Starting with the powerful quote that is justified by museums the best and let the future know the past history of anything has the significance of speciality that attracts an abundant number of individuals to peek out in past and try to understand the livelihood of the the-then era.
India amongst the countries that believe to let the past live in the present and flourish through museums and other means. Art and artefact are the dwellers of the museums that take you to the creative world. And, one of the creative and revolutionary things that happened in the gone era, is commuting resources in India.
From man-forced Palanquins to motor vehicles, India has a vast history of commuting resources and these museums have beautifully preserved to represent in the public domain.
With the advent of the motor car by Karl Benz in 1886 from Germany, soon India also witnessed its first motor vehicle in 1897 when a resident of Calcutta brought the first car to India. Within the span of a year, four cars were brought to Bombay and one of them was owned by Jamshedji Tata.
The royal personalities and kingdom holders have always been curious to bring something innovative to the land of India. Though the evidence is blurry, it is said that It was the Maharaja of Patiala who imported the First Motor Car into India in 1892. This was a tricar from De Dion-Bouton with three tyres powered by steam.
Let’s take a look at how motor history has been preserved in these prominent museums of India.
Passion speaks louder than anything! The quote is completely given justice by Mr Tarun Thakral who is the owner of the Heritage Transport Museum of Haryana. His sole motive to preserve Indian Heritage Transport has bestowed us with a beautiful and creative museum that is “Aww to Explore”.
This is a four-storeyed building containing around 120 vehicles and still adding in numbers. Right from the 1520’s Car Toy from Indus Valley Civilization to the latest 1980’s Padmini Deluxe, you will enter the world of transport. Decoration of the museum is the creative vision of Mr Thakral that keep you hooked up with each article whether it's a coin-decorated car or wheel-made chairs.
In addition, you will witness 40 classic and vintage cars, 15 scooters, 25 pre-mechanised transportation, piper aircraft and many more.
Classic and Vintage Car Collection is another transport treasure in India situated on the Gulab Bagh Road in Udaipur, Rajasthan. In this museum, you will mostly see the motor cars that were used by the Maharana of Mewar. It was first brought to the public domain in the year 2000, on 15 February. It was initially inaugurated by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. The total collections of vehicles are 20 antique crs, 4 Rolls-Royce’s, 2 Cadillacs, 1MG: TC Convertible, One Ford A-Convertible, One Vauxhall-12, and solar-powered rickshaws.
Initiated by Pranlal Bhogilal, this vintage car museum takes you to the late 19th and early 20th century with its vast collection of vintage cars. The museum is parted away into the vintage village and Anand Nagari. You will see here 36 Rolls Royce’s including British Daimler(Hooper). Apart from this, you will come across Tanga, Bail Gadi and many more.
Set up in 2004 by Pradeep Naik, it is the first and only vintage car museum in Goa. From 1938 to the late 60s, the museum is consistent with all types of cars with a vast number of vintage cars including Rolls Royce’s, Mercedez, Peugeot 301 etc. Also, the museum holds an amazing ambience to cherish your time while you explore it.
The above-mentioned museums are the heritage of India showing the transport history of our country and one definitely needs to get into the deep to understand the extravaganza of transport. All are surely mind-boggling efforts to let the present and future of India know about one of the most important man-made resources.
