The history of Dhanaulti dates back to the 17th century when it was ruled by Raja Sudarshan Shah who is remembered as the founder of Tehri district. He established his kingdom in Tehri Garhwal region. After his death in 1859, his throne was passed on to his successors who ruled the region between 1815 to 1949.
People belonging to the Tehri Garhwal region actively participated in the Quit India Movement and soon after independence in 1947, they waged a protest against the rule of Garhwal King. The protest led to the merger of Tehri Garhwal region into the state of Uttar Pradesh. Later in 2000 when Uttar Pradesh was partitioned, Tehri Garhwal was declared as an independent district falling in the Indian State of Uttarakhand.
