History of Sawai Madhopur

Built by Madho Singh I of Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur has been named after him too. As per historical records, it is believed that the construction of this planned city began on January 19, 1763.

One of the highlights of this place has always been the Sawai Madhopur Lodge, which now has turned into a hotel. This lodge was built in 1936 by Maharaja Man Singh II and was used particularly as a hunting lodge till his death in 1970.

The popularity of the lodge was such that even Queen Elizabeth couldn’t resist herself from staying here during her visit to Sawai Madhopur in January of 1961.
